Most Common Liver Functions Tests:

  1. ALT test

It is used by the body to metabolize protein. It can be released into the blood if the liver is not working. It increases the level of ALT. An ALT above 33 IU/L in males and 25 IU/L (international units per liter) in females typically requires further testing.

  1. AST test

In several parts of the body, an enzyme is found in the heart, liver, and muscles. It measures along with ALT to check liver problems.

AST can be released into the bloodstream when the liver is damaged. A high result on an AST test indicates a problem with the liver or muscles.

The normal range varies up to 40 IU/L in adults and may be higher in young children.

  1. ALP test

Alkaline Phosphatase is an enzyme found in bones, bile ducts, and the liver. This test is ordered in combination with several other tests.

High-level ALP indicates liver inflammation or bone disease.

The normal range is typically up to 120 U/L in adults.

  1. Albumin test

The main protein made by the liver is Albumin. It performs:

  • It stops fluid from leaking out of your blood vessels.
  •  It nourishes tissues.
  • It transports hormones, vitamins, and other substances throughout the body.

A lower result in a test can indicate that the liver isn’t working properly. The normal range is 3.5–5.0 grams per deciliter (g/dL). However, low albumin can be a result of poor nutrition and kidney disease.

  1. Bilirubin test

The waste product from the breakdown of red blood cells is called Bilirubin.

With a damaged liver, Bilirubin can’t be properly processed. It leads to a high level of bilirubin in the blood which indicates that the liver is not working properly.

The normal range for total bilirubin is typically 0.1–1.2 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).
